In short: Maktabati works without an account, and doesn’t ask for your name. If you choose to sign in with Apple or Google, we keep your email address and a copy of your saved words, decks and reading place on our server, so they follow you to your other devices; you can delete the account in the App at any time. Otherwise your books, flashcards and progress stay on your phone. To run subscriptions we use Superwall, which receives a random ID made on your phone, your purchase status, how you use our upgrade screens, basic device details and simple learning counts, such as how many flashcards you have. If you request a book or report a problem, what you send is stored on our own server so we can read it. We don’t show ads, we don’t sell data, and we don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
1. Who we are
Maktabati (“the App”) and this website are made by Ilmtech Limited, a company registered in the United Kingdom (“we”, “us”). We are the controller of the personal information described here. You can reach us at contact@ilmtech.ltd.
2. Information that stays on your phone
Unless you sign in (section 6), what Maktabati knows about you never leaves your device. This includes:
- your flashcards, decks, quiz results, streaks and reading position;
- your settings, such as Arabic font and text size;
- your Focus settings and earned minutes;
- a random identifier that Maktabati creates the first time you open it.
We cannot see this information. It is removed when you delete the App, and it is included in your phone’s backups in the usual way.
Focus on iPhone
Focus uses Apple’s Screen Time framework, which you must allow. The apps you choose to limit are given to Maktabati by Apple as private tokens, so we cannot see which apps they are or how long you use them. Screen Time information stays on your device and is never sent to us or to Superwall.
Focus on Android
On Android, Focus uses the Accessibility service, which you must turn on yourself after Maktabati explains what it does. It only reads the name of the app on screen, so Focus can count your minutes in the apps you limit and close them when your minutes run out. It never reads what is on your screen or what you type. If Accessibility is off, Focus can use usage access, which you also allow in Android Settings, to see which app is open. Focus can show its reminder over other apps if you allow it to display over other apps. The list of apps you limit and everything Focus sees stay on your phone and are never sent to us or to Superwall.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, they are created on your phone, for example to let you open Maktabati from the Focus block screen, or to remind you before a free trial ends. No notification content is sent to us.
3. Information shared with Superwall
We use Superwall (Superwall Inc., United States) to show our upgrade screens and to manage subscriptions bought through the App Store or Google Play. When you use the App, Superwall receives:
| Information | Why |
|---|---|
| The random identifier created on your phone | To keep your subscription status and upgrade-screen history together |
| Your subscription status and App Store or Google Play transaction details (such as product, dates and price; never your payment card) | To unlock Premium and keep it unlocked |
| Interactions with upgrade screens (views, plan chosen, purchases, restores, closes) and which part of the App opened them | To show the right offer and measure which upgrade screens work |
| Device and app details: device model, iOS or Android version, language, region, time zone, app version, and an approximate location (country and city) worked out from your IP address | To show prices and content that fit your device and region |
| Simple learning counts: flashcards created, quizzes completed, quiz accuracy, longest streak, words learned, number of decks, dates of these actions | To decide when to show an upgrade offer and to understand how Premium is used |
Superwall does not receive your name, email address, Apple Account or Google Account details, payment card, the words you save, what you read, or anything from Focus. Superwall processes this information on our behalf. You can read Superwall’s privacy policy.
4. Purchases through Apple and Google
On iPhone, subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple through the App Store. On Android, they are sold and billed by Google through Google Play. Apple or Google handles your payment details and tells the App whether your purchase is valid. We never see your payment card. Their handling of your information is covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy and Google’s Privacy Policy.
5. Book requests, problem reports and email
When you request a book or report a problem in the App, it is stored on our server, which Supabase (Supabase Inc.) runs for us in London. We receive:
- what you type, and your email address if you choose to give it;
- for a problem report, the screenshot if you choose to include it (a picture of Maktabati’s own screen, nothing else on your device) and the part of the App you were using;
- device and app details: device model, iOS or Android version, language, region and app version;
- a random identifier the App creates on our server the first time you send something, so your requests stay together (if you sign in, it becomes your account’s identifier).
We use this only to read and answer your request, to fix problems, and to stop misuse. Nothing is sent unless you tap Send. A copy goes to Linear (Linear Orbit, Inc.), the tool we use to keep track of problems and requests. If you delete your account in the App, your requests and reports are deleted from our server, and your email, device details and screenshot are removed from Linear.
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to reply to you and to improve the App, and we delete it when it is no longer needed.
6. Optional account and progress sync
Signing in is optional, and the App works the same without it. If you sign in with Apple or Google in Profile, Apple or Google sends us an identifier for your account and your email address (with Apple, this can be a private relay address if you choose Hide My Email). We don’t receive your password, your contacts or anything else from your Apple or Google Account.
While you are signed in, the App keeps a copy of the following on our server, which Supabase runs for us in London, so it is the same on all the devices you sign in on:
- your saved words, with their meanings and quiz progress;
- your decks and the words in them;
- your place in each book (chapter, position and how far through you are).
We use this only to keep your account working and your progress in step across your devices. Signing in doesn’t change your subscription: Premium stays with the purchase you made through the App Store or Google Play.
Sign out (in Profile) stops syncing on that device; what’s on the device stays. Delete account (in Profile) deletes your account and everything stored with it on our server straight away: synced progress, book requests and problem reports. You can also ask us to delete your account at www.ilmtech.ltd/delete-account or by emailing contact@ilmtech.ltd.
7. This website
This website does not use cookies, analytics or advertising, and it loads no third-party scripts or fonts. Like any web server, our hosting provider keeps standard access logs (IP address, pages requested, browser type and time) for security and to keep the site running.
8. What we don’t do
- We don’t show ads or include advertising tools.
- We don’t sell or rent personal information.
- We don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and we don’t use your device’s advertising identifier.
- Downloading a book, the dictionary or word audio sends nothing about you: the App asks our content server (Cloudflare runs it for us) for the file, Cloudflare sees your IP address only to deliver it, and we keep no record of downloads.
9. Our legal basis (UK GDPR)
- To provide your subscription: necessary to perform our contract with you.
- To keep your account and sync your progress, if you sign in: necessary to provide the service you asked for.
- To run and improve our upgrade screens and the App: our legitimate interest in running a sustainable app, balanced against the small amount of information involved, which doesn’t identify you by name.
- To answer book requests and problem reports: our legitimate interest in replying to you and fixing the App; you choose what to send.
- Focus permissions (Screen Time, Accessibility, usage access, display over other apps) and notifications: only with your permission, which you can withdraw at any time in your phone’s Settings.
10. International transfers
Superwall is based in the United States, so the information in section 3 is processed there. Book requests, problem reports, your account and synced progress are stored in the UK, but Supabase is a US company and may access them from abroad to run the service, and the copies in Linear are kept in the United States. When personal information leaves the UK, we rely on the safeguards UK law requires, such as approved contractual clauses.
11. How long we keep information
Information on your phone stays until you delete the App. Superwall keeps the information in section 3 for as long as it is needed to manage your subscription and our upgrade screens, under its own retention rules. Your account and synced progress are kept until you delete the account. Book requests, problem reports, screenshots and emails are kept until we have dealt with them, and for a reasonable time afterwards in case you write again.
12. Your rights
You have the right to ask for a copy of your personal information, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to receive it in a portable format. Email contact@ilmtech.ltd with the subject “Data request”.
If you have an account, you can delete it and everything stored with it in Profile at any time. Superwall records are linked only to the random identifier on your device, not to your name or account. Tell us roughly when you installed, subscribed or sent a request or report, and we will do our best to find and delete the matching records. Deleting the App removes everything stored on your phone.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.
13. Children
Maktabati is suitable for learners of all ages. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children beyond what is described above. The App has no chat or public profiles, and signing in is optional. If you believe a child has sent us personal information by email, contact us and we will delete it.
14. Changes
If we change how the App handles information, we will update this policy and the date at the top, and update our App Store and Google Play privacy details to match.
